44 K Babu Rao Alumuni Chemical Engineering, IIT Chennai It is most unfortunate that while the whole world learned from the Bhopal disaster and broght great changes in laws to protect workers and public, we in India have made no sincere attempts even to improve safety at wokplace. It is also disturbing to see institutions that have no committment to safety in their own organisation are sitting on taskforce committees setup by ministry of chemicals and taking decisions on cleanup of the bhopal plantsite. It is highly unethical to act as experts in areas of science that they have no knowledge. IIT, Chennai should not associate with a criminal company that refuses to own its responsibility towards victims of the disaster. Jobs in a killer company are soaked in the blood of the poor and innocent victims. Hyderabad

153 Ram Krishnaswamy www.iitglobal.org Alumuni B Tech Civil, IIT-Madras, 1970 Mergers and acquisitions should not allow Multi National Companies to escape punishment and legal and moral obligations to society at large. This is precisely what DOW Chemical is doing by acquiring Union Carbide and trying to discard all liabilities. Stop for a minute and think of the untold suffering and loss of life endured by people of Bhopal. Now close your eyes and think they were your family members who died in Bhopal or went blind or got cancer. Will you agree to arguments that this accident occurred 30 odd years ago and we have to move on. Yes we can move on if DOW Chemical accepts its obligations to the people of Bhopal and makes amends.
