We are writing to you to condemn in the strongest terms the brutal killing of 15 (general estimate) people in Nandigram on 14th March, 2007. We are outraged and alarmed at the state's disregard for the life of the common citizen. We are opposed to the illegal alliance between the state machinery and the members of the ruling party that has unleashed such unnecessary violence in Nandigram. Such inhuman repression on part of the state is a blemish on Indian democracy.

We stand in solidarity with the families of the people killed and wounded. Our condolences and sympathies are with the people.

We demand,

1) An immediate independent probe into the matter fixing responsibility and bringing the culprits to justice irrespective of their standings.

2) Withdrawal of police force and armed party cadres from Nandigram and opening up the area to the scrutiny of the media and other civil society organisations.

3) The state-government take up the immediate responsibility of economic rehabilitation of the bereaved and affected.
