We condemn the manner in which police entered and vandalized the homes of the villagers. Despite the presence of women police, it was the policemen who manhandled and beat up the women folk. We have been following the deteriorating situation in Singur and are alarmed at the total exclusion of peoples' voice in the decision to establish a car factory on agricultural land. We stand in solidarity with the farmers of Singur, against all forms of state violence and the thoughtless destruction of livelihoods. In the immediate aftermath of the incident of 2nd Dec, the Government should care for the people who have suffered at the hands of the police. We urge the government to ensure that such incidents of terrorizing its own people are not repeated in the future. Such acts of state aggression do not bode well for democracy in West Bengal.
